Former Mayor Devendra Jaggi announced that efforts are being made to include the traditional kuhls (irrigation channels) of the Dharamshala Assembly constituency under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project. This move aims to ensure their long-term maintenance and uninterrupted water flow.
He noted that several kuhls were damaged during the monsoon season, disrupting irrigation in many areas. To strengthen and streamline the region’s irrigation system, repair and cleaning work on these traditional water channels is being carried out at a rapid pace.
Jaggi shared that the kuhls in Passu, Barwala, and Kand Kardiyana have already been repaired and made operational again, bringing significant relief to local farmers and horticulturists. He added that restoration work on other kuhls in the Dharamshala region is also progressing swiftly to ensure adequate water availability for irrigation.
Responding to requests from women’s groups in Wards 8 and 9 of the Dharamshala Municipal Corporation, Jaggi conducted a site inspection of the Sakoh kuhl. During the visit, he directed officials to restore water flow in the channel promptly to support local agricultural needs.
He also inspected the Barwala kuhl repair work and interacted with villagers, commending their active participation. “Community involvement is key to the lasting success of development projects,” he said, thanking residents for their collective efforts.
Highlighting another initiative, Jaggi mentioned that temporary water flow has been restored in the Jatehar kuhl originating from Sheela Bhatehar, with instructions given to the irrigation department to find a permanent solution.
He emphasized that development efforts in the Dharamshala Assembly constituency are being prioritized equitably, especially those addressing essential needs like water supply, irrigation, and sanitation. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the region is progressing rapidly, he said.
“Our goal is to ensure that development reaches every village, every field, and every home—not just the cities,” Jaggi asserted. “We are committed to making Dharamshala a model constituency where every citizen has access to basic amenities.”
