Shimla:
A doctor at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla has been accused of assaulting a patient in the department of pulmonary medicine, leaving him with a bleeding nose and other injuries.

The incident has triggered outrage among the patient’s relatives, who staged a protest on the hospital premises and demanded the immediate dismissal of the accused doctor.

The patient, identified as Arjun, a resident of Kupvi in Chopal area of Shimla district who works as a teacher at a private academy, had come to IGMC for an endoscopy. According to his family members, the doctor began speaking rudely to the patient and soon lost his temper, leading to a physical altercation.

The family members alleged that the doctor repeatedly punched the patient in the face. A video of the incident, purportedly recorded by attendants, shows the doctor striking the patient, with blood seen coming from his nose. Following the incident, relatives raised slogans against the doctor and the hospital administration, accusing them of high-handedness and negligence.

As per the family’s version, after the endoscopy, the patient was asked by a doctor to rest on a bed for some time. While he was lying on a vacant bed, another doctor wearing a mask allegedly approached and began behaving discourteously. When the attendants explained that the patient had been advised to rest, the doctor reportedly became aggressive and assaulted him. The family also claimed that the patient tried to defend himself during the scuffle.

The police reached the hospital after the situation escalated and took the patient and his relatives to the police station to record their statements. IGMC hospital management said an inquiry had been initiated into the incident and that responsibility would be fixed only after the investigation is completed.

Hospital authorities maintained that all aspects of the incident, including the conduct of both the doctor and the patient, are being examined. Further action, they said, would be taken based on the findings of the probe.
