Dharamshala:
Amid widespread devastation caused by continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, the Dharamshala Ropeway has emerged as a fresh concern, with authorities temporarily halting its operations after a major landslide near one of its support pillars.
According to an official order issued by the Kangra district administration, the landslide occurred in the vicinity of Pillar No. 5, severely compromising its approach structure and posing a serious risk to passenger safety.
Operations suspended as precautionary measure
In light of the situation, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority, ordered an immediate suspension of all ropeway operations. The move has been taken as a precautionary measure to avoid any potential mishap.
The DC has directed the ropeway operating agency to strictly comply with the suspension order and ensure the safety of infrastructure and the public. The decision comes amid ongoing landslide warnings and unstable terrain in the region due to intense rainfall.
Technical panel to assess damage
A technical committee, to be chaired by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Civil) of Dharamshala, has been tasked with inspecting the site and submitting a report within two days. The panel will include geological experts from Central University-Dharamshala, representatives from various departments and officials from Dharamshala Municipal Corporation.
The authorities said that any decision on resuming ropeway services will depend entirely on the findings of this committee. The Deputy Commissioner has also instructed the local police and the SDM to ensure full enforcement of the suspension order.
