MANDI: Suman Pandit, a sports teacher at DAV Centenary Public School (DAV CPS) in Mandi has created history by becoming the first woman Associate NCC Officer (ANO) in the Air Wing from Himachal Pradesh.
Selected by 1 HP Air Squadron NCC, Kullu, Suman underwent the 102 Junior Division Pre-Commissioning Course at Tambaram, Chennai, from January 20 to March 20, 2025.
With the support of DAV CPS Principal KS Guleria, she successfully completed the intensive two-month training, gaining expertise in NCC Air Wing operations.
Suman expressed her pride, stating that serving the nation had always been her dream. She now aims to motivate students to join the armed forces and fulfill her NCC responsibilities with dedication.
Journey of resilience and determination
Principal KS Guleria lauded her achievement, calling it a moment of pride for the school and expressing confidence that she would elevate DAV CPS-Mandi’s NCC Air Wing to new heights.

Apart from being an NCC officer, Suman Pandit is also a yoga teacher at DAV CPS-Mandi. Her journey has been far from easy. She lost her father at an early age, leaving her family in financial distress.
Despite the hardships, she pursued her education and career while supporting her ailing mother. The situation worsened when she lost her brother and the shock left her mother paralysed.
Determined to overcome adversity, Suman turned to sports to secure a future for herself and provide medical aid to her mother.
Won medals in dance contest, reality show
Her dedication bore fruit when she won a gold medal in a national dance competition in Bhopal (2007). She went on to win silver medals in inter-college handball championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
She also gained national recognition as a top-six contestant in a UTV reality show. In 2018, she secured a bronze medal in the Federation Cup National Handball Championship, followed by a silver medal in the 47th Senior Women National Handball Championship in 2019.
“My goal is to educate and motivate young girls to adopt yoga and sports in their daily lives. It not only keeps one healthy but also creates opportunities to represent the state at national and international levels,” said Suman.
