Chamba: Dalhousie, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most sought-after hill stations, has been plunged into darkness for the past 20 days as its streetlights remain non-functional. The issue arose when the Municipal Council of Dalhousie failed to clear outstanding electricity bills, prompting the electricity department to cut off power to the streetlights. This administrative lapse has not only inconvenienced local residents but has also severely impacted the town’s tourism-dependent economy, tarnishing the image of the Congress-led state government.

Tourism on the Backfoot

The timing of the blackout couldn’t be worse, with Christmas and New Year just around the corner. These are peak tourism months for Dalhousie, a town known for its snow-clad charm and vibrant celebrations. Hoteliers and tour operators fear a significant decline in tourist footfall if the issue persists. “Dalhousie is synonymous with beauty and safety. A dark, unsafe town leaves a bad impression, especially for families and women travelers,” said a senior member of the Dalhousie Hotel Association.

Tourists currently in the town have also expressed their dismay. A tourist from Chandigarh noted, “We came here to enjoy the festive vibe, but the dark streets make evening strolls unpleasant and unsafe. It’s disappointing for a town that claims to be a prime tourist destination.”

Businesses Feel the Pinch

Local businesses, already grappling with post-pandemic recovery, are feeling the economic strain caused by the blackout. Shopkeepers and restaurant owners reported closing earlier than usual due to safety concerns, while taxi operators have reduced night services. “Streetlights are not a luxury; they’re a necessity. Without them, nightlife and evening business are almost non-existent,” said a member of the Dalhousie Business Association.

Adding to the worry is the increased likelihood of wildlife entering urban areas. In the absence of proper lighting, wild animals such as leopards and bears may roam into residential areas, posing a serious threat to life and property.

Community Rises to Action

On Monday, a delegation comprising representatives from the Business Association, Hotel Association, Taxi Union, and local residents met SDM Dalhousie, Anil Bhardwaj, to press for an immediate resolution. They submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, calling for urgent intervention to restore streetlights.

“This isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it’s a question of safety, reputation, and livelihoods. If the lights are not restored by tomorrow, we will organize a candlelight march to protest the administration’s negligence,” said a delegation member.

In response, SDM Bhardwaj assured the delegation that steps are being taken to resolve the issue at the earliest. However, the incident has highlighted internal lapses within the Congress government, adding to its growing list of challenges.

As Dalhousie remains in darkness, the focus now shifts to whether the administration can act swiftly to restore normalcy and prevent further damage to the town’s reputation and economy.
