Cloudburst Triggers Devastating Flash Floods in a Kangra valley

Chota Bhangal (Kangra): A catastrophic cloudburst followed by incessant heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in the remote Chhota Bhanghal valley on Friday morning, triggering flash floods that buried four vehicles under debris and caused extensive damage to 14 houses and a local middle school.

The disaster, which struck Luwai village, around 70 km from Baijnath, has left the region reeling under its impact.

Widespread Damage and Disruptions

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has led to massive destruction in Kangra district, disrupting normal life. Power supply in dozens of villages has been cut off after electricity poles were uprooted, plunging the region into darkness.

Several key roads, including those leading to Multhan, Luhardi, Barot, and Kothi Kohar, have been blocked due to landslides and fallen trees. Hundreds of vehicles are stranded as roads remain buried under snow and heavy boulders.

Camping sites along the Uhal River have also suffered significant damage, with water levels rising dangerously. In response, authorities have opened floodgates at two hydroelectric power projects in the valley to manage the overflowing water.

Safety Measures and Official Advisory

With the Meteorological Department predicting moderate to heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours, the district administration has issued an urgent advisory, urging residents and tourists to stay away from rivers and landslide-prone areas. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured swift action to prevent further damage.

Delayed Rescue Efforts Raise Concerns

Despite the severity of the disaster, residents of Chhota Bhanghal have expressed concerns over the delay in rescue and relief operations.

MLA Kishori Lal confirmed that relief teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, and the Baijnath administration has been directed to prioritize rescue and rehabilitation efforts. He assured that every possible step would be taken to restore normalcy in the region.

Kangra’s Vulnerability to Natural Disasters

Kangra district has a history of severe weather-related calamities. The hilly terrain, combined with frequent cloudbursts and landslides, makes it particularly vulnerable. In previous years, flash floods have caused widespread damage, affecting both infrastructure and livelihoods.

The recent heavy snowfall in the upper Dhauladhar range has further intensified the situation, contributing to the surge in water levels.

Government’s Development Focus on Kangra

Recognizing the district’s vulnerability, the state government has been actively working on strengthening disaster management and infrastructure in Kangra. Various development projects have been launched to improve road connectivity, power supply, and flood control measures.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has emphasized that Kangra remains a priority for the government, with efforts underway to enhance the region’s resilience against such natural calamities.

As the situation unfolds, authorities remain on high alert, with teams working to clear blocked roads, restore electricity, and provide immediate relief to affected families. Residents are advised to stay cautious and follow official advisories to ensure their safety.
