Bharmour
The state government’s decision to merge the Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School, Bhramour, with the Government Senior Secondary School (Boys) has sparked widespread opposition in the tribal subdivision of Bharmour.
The school, established in 1955 by Mahant Jai Krishan Giri Maharaj in memory of his vision for women’s upliftment, is regarded as a symbol of faith, heritage, and commitment to girls’ education. Local residents argue that merging the institution erases a historic legacy and hurts the religious sentiments attached to Mahant Jai Krishan Giri Maharaj’s name.
Opposition has intensified, with several organizations and community leaders voicing strong objections. Among them are:
- Priests of the historic Chaurasi temples
- Chaurasi Vyapar Mandal, Bharmour
- ABVP Bhramour unit
- Shiv Bhoomi Sewa Dal, Bharmour
- Former Zila Parishad member Anil Dhakog
- Former BDC members Vikram Thakur and Pawan Kumar Sanchui
- Local intellectuals and elders
They allege that while no schools in Bhatiyat or Chamba have been merged, the government has targeted Bharmour’s heritage institution, thereby disregarding local sentiments.
Community representatives have submitted memoranda to the Chief Minister through Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bharmour, Vikas Sharma, urging reconsideration of the merger. They have also demanded that Mahant Jai Krishan Giri Maharaj’s portrait be installed in the school premises, the year of establishment be inscribed, and the institution be renamed in his honor.
