Chamba visit seen as key political signal; party hopeful of consensus amid internal divisions
KANGRA: BJP national president JP Nadda has arrived in Himachal Pradesh, rekindling hopes within the party’s state unit that the long-pending appointment of the Himachal BJP president may finally see resolution.
His two-day visit, including a public felicitation in Chamba and closed-door meetings with senior party leaders, has triggered political speculation about a breakthrough in the leadership deadlock.
Nadda landed at the Gaggal airport in Kangra around 1 pm and immediately left for Chamba, where a grand civic reception has been planned in his honour.
Over 3,000 workers are expected to attend the event, which is being seen as both a show of strength and a strategic gathering to gauge grassroots sentiment.
Felicitation in Chamba draws massive mobilisation
To make the public event a success, BJP leaders from all constituencies in Chamba district have been tasked with mobilising crowds.
The visit is said to have been facilitated at the request of Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan, who has personal and political ties to the region. Mahajan reached Chamba two days prior to oversee preparations.
Prominent state BJP leaders, including current party president Rajeev Bindal, Kangra MP Rajeev Bhardwaj and senior figures like Vipin Singh Parmar, have also arrived in Chamba to join the celebrations and strategy meetings.
All eyes on elusive state president appointment
Nadda’s arrival has intensified speculation about the state leadership vacuum that has persisted for over four months.
Despite initially promising to appoint a new state president by December 25, 2024, the BJP high command has struggled to reach a consensus, largely due to factionalism within the Himachal unit.
The frontrunners for the post include Rajeev Bhardwaj and Rajeev Bindal, while other names doing the rounds are Sikander Kumar, Vipin Parmar, Bikram Thakur, Satpal Satti, Randhir Sharma, Trilok Jamwal and Indu Goswami.
Sources said Nadda may use his time in Chamba to hold informal consultations with senior leaders in an effort to build consensus and end the deadlock.
