Teachers reiterate demands for autonomy, academic freedom, institutional dignity, and CAS restoration

The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) continued its ‘Save University Campaign’ for the 21st consecutive day on Tuesday, staging a peaceful sit-in outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office. The protest highlighted demands to safeguard the university’s autonomy, academic freedom, institutional dignity, and the restoration of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS).
The day’s dharna was addressed by Dr. Naresh (Hindi), Dr. Seema (Women’s Studies), Dr. Priyanka Vaidya (English), Prof. Chandramohan (ITHM), and Dr. Manohar (Physical Education).
- Dr. Naresh (Hindi): Emphasized that the university is not merely an administrative body but a vital center for the free growth of knowledge, language, literature, and ideas. He urged teachers to remain united in defending academic freedom and dignity.
- Dr. Seema (Women’s Studies): Stressed that autonomy is linked not only to administrative decisions but also to inclusivity and equal opportunities. She called for participatory decision-making and a more democratic academic environment.
- Dr. Priyanka Vaidya (English): Highlighted the direct link between academic freedom, professional growth, and institutional quality. She pressed for the restoration of CAS to ensure transparent career development for teachers.
- Prof. Chandramohan (ITHM): Noted the university’s long-standing contributions to education, research, and human resource development, urging that future policies uphold institutional identity and democratic processes.
- Dr. Manohar (Physical Education): Pointed out the importance of sports and physical education as integral to academics, calling for better infrastructure and resources while strengthening autonomy.
HPUTWA reiterated that accountability and transparency are essential, but they must not come at the cost of autonomy and academic freedom. The association urged teachers, staff, researchers, and students to remain united in safeguarding the university’s independence and dignity.
