“Stop Unnecessary Fees for Final Year Students,” Says Shaifali Thakur
“No Public Toilets or Drinking Water in the State’s Only Agricultural University – ABVP”
“Make NCC Optional, Give Students the Freedom to Choose NSS as Well”
“Demand for Improvement in Hostels, Library, and Basic Facilities”
Palampur: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Agricultural University Palampur Unit submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor regarding various issues faced by students and necessary reforms in the university.
ABVP Agricultural University Unit President, Shaifali Thakur, presented the problems in detail along with their solutions and urged the administration to take swift action.
She pointed out that final-year students, when sent for RAWE and internship programs outside the university, do not use facilities like the library, sports, transport, and NCC/NSS.
However, the university still charges them full fees for these services, which is unfair. She demanded that the administration review this issue immediately and take steps to reduce these charges.
She further highlighted that undergraduate male students in the university are currently forced to take NCC, while as per ICAR guidelines and policies in other agricultural universities, students have the option to choose between NCC and NSS.
ABVP demanded that students at the university should also have the right to select either NCC or NSS based on their preference.
Speaking about the registration process, she stated that students currently have to visit multiple departments to get their registration cards signed, leading to unnecessary difficulties.
To resolve this, she demanded that the entire registration process be shifted online from the upcoming semester, making it simpler and hassle-free.
ABVP also raised concerns over the lack of basic public facilities in the university. Shaifali Thakur stated that the university lacks public drinking water and toilet facilities, causing difficulties for visitors and students.
Additionally, there are very few dustbins placed in public areas, leading to sanitation issues. ABVP urged the administration to immediately install proper drinking water facilities, public washrooms, and more dustbins across the campus.
She further mentioned that the number of students in various disciplines has increased significantly, but hostel capacity remains insufficient, particularly for female students who are struggling to find accommodation.
ABVP demanded that the university administration construct new hostels at the earliest to address this growing issue.
Another key demand raised was regarding exposure visits and student exchange programs. Currently, students do not get opportunities to visit national and international institutes for educational exposure, which prevents them from gaining practical knowledge and insights into the latest agricultural and technological advancements.
ABVP urged the administration to organize academic tours and exchange programs to provide students with hands-on learning experiences.
Concerns were also raised regarding the limited library hours. At present, the university library closes after official working hours, making it difficult for students to study during evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
ABVP demanded that the newly built reading hall be made available 24×7 with proper amenities and security arrangements to ensure students can study without any disruptions.
Speaking at the end, Unit Secretary Ankit Kaundal and Vice President Anmol emphasized that the issues raised by students cannot be ignored any longer.
They warned that if the university administration does not take prompt action on these demands, ABVP will be compelled to launch a protest.
During this , ABVP Agricultural University President Shaifali Thakur, Secretary Ankit Kaundal, and all unit members from different colleges were present
