Four senior doctors at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla are learnt have been formally chargesheeted in connection with the recent fire incident at the canteen of the New OPD Block.
The move comes as the state Health Department has expressed dissatisfaction with their earlier response to inquiries regarding the matter. The fire, which occurred last year in the canteen located on the top floor of the New OPD Block, resulted in losses estimated at around Rs 2.25 crore.
Hospital sources have revealed that alleged negligence surrounding the allocation of the canteen space, coupled with lack of proper record-keeping regarding allotment, prompted investigations by the government authorities after the incident.
Despite prior issuance of show-cause notices, the responses provided by senior doctors failed to satisfy the Health Department, prompting the recent action of charging them in the case. The doctors have been summoned to provide explanation regarding their alleged negligence in the canteen allocation process.
The news of the chargesheeting of senior doctors has rapidly spread throughout the hospital, sparking widespread interest and speculation among staff and stakeholders. Individuals across the hospital are actively seeking information and updates on the case, eager to understand the implications and potential outcomes of the government’s actions.
While the development has garnered attention within the medical community, attempts to obtain comments from the chargesheeted doctors largely remained futile. Several doctors refrained from discussing the matter while some claimed they have not yet received official communication regarding the charges against them.
