18 drug addicts try to flee rehab near Shimla, allege brutal assault after recapture by staff

Shimla: A case of alleged physical abuse has emerged from a de-addiction centre in Theog near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh where a group of drug addicts attempted to escape, claiming they were brutally assaulted by the staff upon being recaptured.


The police have registered a case based on the complaint of one of the victims and initiated an investigation.
According to reports, a 25-year-old youth from Rohru was admitted to the rehabilitation centre in Matiana in Theog on March 1 (2025) by his family to help him overcome drug addiction.

Tracked down in forest, ‘brought forcibly’ to rehab

In his complaint to the police, the youth alleged that on March 3, he, along with 17 others, planned an escape and managed to flee the facility after deceiving the staff.


After escaping, the group reached the forest near Kaljar village, but the rehab centre employees tracked them down and forcibly brought them back.


The youth alleged that upon recapture, the staff severely assaulted them, inflicting injuries on their heads, hands, legs and faces.


Furthermore, he claimed that while being taken back, the employees threatened them with dire consequences, warning that they would be killed if they attempted to escape again.

Police register FIR against rehab centre

Following this incident, the youth informed his family about the alleged mistreatment, leading them to approach the police. Based on his statement, the Theog police have filed an FIR under Sections 115(2) and 351(2) of the Indian Penal Code.


The police have begun their investigation and are interrogating the rehab centre’s staff. Officials have also confirmed that the injured victims have undergone medical examinations and further action will be taken based on the reports.
