Dr. Manohar Lal, Horticulture Officer of Bharmour, has issued a special advisory to orchardists regarding the use of caustic soda sprays on apple trees during winter. He cautioned that while many farmers use caustic soda to clean lichen from tree bark, improper application can cause serious damage to plants.
Key Guidelines for Farmers
- Correct Quantity: Farmers should prepare the solution using only 5 to 7 grams of caustic soda per litre of water. Since caustic soda is a strong alkali, excessive amounts can burn the bark and branches of trees.
- Proper Timing: Spraying should be done only in winter when trees are in a dormant stage and temperatures are low.
- Safety Precautions: Farmers must wear protective gear such as glasses, gloves, and masks while spraying, as accidental contact can cause skin irritation or burns.
Dr. Lal emphasized that careful handling of caustic soda is essential to protect both the orchard and the farmer.
