Hariman Sharma, the famous orchardist from Galasin village in Ghumarvin subdivision of Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh, who stunned the agricultural world by successfully growing apples in the scorching heat of 45 degrees Celsius, is now turning his attention to avocado farming.
His relentless pursuit of innovation has earned Hariman Sharma the prestigious Padma Shri award, and he sees avocado cultivation as the next frontier in Himachal Pradesh’s agricultural landscape.
Hariman Sharma expressed immense pride upon hearing about his Padma Shri nomination, viewing it as a recognition of his unwavering efforts and a motivation to continue breaking new ground.
Recognising the rising demand and lucrative market for avocados, he believes this superfood could revolutionise farming in the state, offering farmers a highly profitable alternative.

High global market of ‘green gold’ avocado

Avocados, often referred to as “green gold,” are primarily grown in countries like Mexico, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Peru and Colombia.
The world’s largest producer of avocados, supplying 45% of the international market, is Mexico, with the state of Michoacán leading global production. Other major producers include Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia and Kenya.
In India, avocados are cultivated in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Sikkim. The United States also grows avocados commercially in Florida, California and Hawaii, while Mediterranean countries such as Israel have established avocado farming as well.
The global market value of avocados has surged in recent years, with prices ranging from $1 to $3 per fruit, depending on quality and origin.

Ideal growing conditions range from 20 to 25°C

Avocado trees prefer warm growing climates and can withstand temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C). They thrive in soil temperatures between 68 and 77°F (20 and 25°C) and are vulnerable to the stresses of temperatures above 104°F (40°C).
Avocado trees require protection from pests and diseases to ensure healthy growth.

Can avocados thrive in Himachal Pradesh?

Given Hariman’s previous success in adapting apple cultivation to warmer climates, his vision for avocados holds promise.
The mid-hill regions of Himachal Pradesh, with their moderate temperatures and suitable altitudes, could provide a conducive environment for avocado farming.
Hariman is currently conducting trials and working with agricultural experts to determine the feasibility of large-scale cultivation.
