Jawali (Kangra): A local court has sentenced a man to one year in jail and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 after finding him guilty of assault in a dispute over cutting tree branches. The verdict was delivered by Judicial Magistrate First Class Shashikant at the Jawali court. In case of non-payment of the fine, the convict will have to serve an additional two months in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Ravi Kumar, representing the government, stated that the case dates back to June 22, 2012. According to the complaint, Munshi Ram, a resident of Ghadjarot in Jawali, reported to the police that at around 3:00 PM, his neighbor Balkaar Singh arrived at his home under the influence of alcohol and started a quarrel. The accused allegedly hurled abusive language at Munshi Ram and attacked him with a sickle, injuring his leg.
Following the complaint, the Jawali police registered a case against Balkaar Singh under Sections 451 (trespassing), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense, the court found Balkaar Singh guilty and pronounced the sentence on Friday.
