Dharamshala:
The police on Monday questioned three of the four students named in connection with the d*eath of a college girl in Himachal Pradesh, with all three rejecting allegations of ragging and the use of caste-based slurs.

Investigators said that if required, they may consider subjecting the accused students — and a professor linked to the case — to polygraph or narco-analysis tests as the probe deepens.

Students deny charges, viral video under scanner

The questioning was conducted at the police station premises, where the accused students maintained that they neither ragged the deceased nor used objectionable language.

The police are also trying to verify details about a senior student referred to by one of the accused in a video that has gone viral on social media.

Investigators are examining who recorded the video before the girl’s death, the circumstances under which it was made and how it was circulated online. Officials said all aspects of the case were being probed “with utmost seriousness”.

UGC panel, women’s commission to step in

The police said that lie-detector or narco tests could be considered if the investigation so demands. Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a fact-finding committee, which is expected to visit Dharamshala in the coming days to conduct an independent inquiry.

A team of the Himachal Pradesh State Women Commission is also likely to reach Dharamshala on Tuesday to assess the situation and interact with stakeholders.

Medical records from multiple hospitals collected

Authorities have already collected treatment records related to the student from around seven hospitals. Records from a private hospital in Pathankot are yet to be obtained. Officials said the medical documents will be crucial in determining the exact illness the student was suffering from and the cause of d*eath.

Once statements of doctors and complete treatment records are compiled, the state government will constitute a medical board. The board is expected to include the health director, the chief medical officer and selected heads of departments from medical colleges, with specialists from psychiatry, medicine and pulmonology likely to be part of it.
