MANDI: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has condemned the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government’s move to file an FIR against rebel Congress MLA Chaitanya Sharma’s father and Independent legislator Ashish Sharma on allegations of horse-trading during the recent Rajya Sabha election.
Terming the action as “unfortunate”, Thakur emphasised the need for immediate withdrawal of the FIR, asserting that the state government had lost confidence of its own party’s legislators.
Thakur highlighted the distress faced by the legislators and their families due to the government’s actions. He criticised the government for providing Z+ security to its own legislators while raising questions about the security of the rebel legislators.
Expressing concern over the political environment, Thakur underscored the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the decisions made by legislators. He urged the government to refrain from harassing legislators and their families, emphasising the need for dialogue and reconciliation.
The opposition leader’s remarks come amidst growing tensions within the state’s political landscape, with implications for the stability of the government. Thakur warned of serious consequences if the government fails to address the grievances of the legislators and restore confidence in the democratic process.
Thakur criticised the Chief Minister’s use of a public platform during the Shivaratri festival to air political grievances, describing it as “unfortunate and inappropriate”. He called for a focus on preserving and promoting cultural heritage instead of using religious events for political purposes.
Thakur’s stance reflects broader concerns about the state of governance and the need for political leadership to prioritise the interests of the people above partisan considerations. As the political situation unfolds, stakeholders await further developments and actions from both the government and the opposition to address the underlying issues and restore stability in the state.
Earlier, Thakur paid obeisance at Tarna Devi and took blessings from Dev Kamrunag during the Shivratri fair in Mandi. He later left for Delhi.
