Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has secured representation at the national level of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), with architect Nand Lal Chandel being co-opted as a member of the IIA National Council for the 2026–28 term.
The induction is being seen as an important development for the state’s architectural fraternity, particularly as it comes during the 109-year journey of the country’s premier professional body of architects.
Chandel has headed the IIA Himachal Pradesh Chapter for two consecutive terms, from 2020–23 and 2023–26. He has also served as Architect-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, Government of Himachal Pradesh, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Architecture.
During his tenure with the state chapter, Chandel focused on bringing architects associated with government departments, private practice and academic institutions onto a common platform. He also encouraged greater involvement of young architects and students in professional activities, with an emphasis on strengthening interaction within the fraternity.
His elevation to the National Council is also significant for the Himachal chapter, providing the state with a voice in national-level deliberations on matters concerning the profession, architectural practice and the broader development of the architectural community.
Expressing gratitude, Chandel thanked IIA National President Ar. Jitendra Mehta and members of the National Council for reposing confidence in him.
He said the responsibility was not merely a personal recognition but an opportunity to represent the aspirations and professional interests of architects from Himachal Pradesh on a national platform.
Chandel said he would seek to contribute constructively to the growth of the Institute, strengthen coordination between the National Council and regional chapters, and work towards expanding professional opportunities and participation within the architectural fraternity.
The development has been welcomed by architects in Himachal Pradesh, who expressed confidence that Chandel’s experience in professional leadership, public service and chapter administration would add value to the deliberations and initiatives of the IIA National Council during its 2026–28 term.
