BJP criticises Himachal CM’s statement on ‘cops assisting drunk tourists reach hotels’, claims will worsen already ‘fragile’ law and order situation

The Newz Radar

SHIMLA: The BJP has launched a scathing attack on Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, condemning his recent statement on dealing with drunken tourists. The BJP has accused CM Sukhu of compromising the dignity of the Chief Minister’s post, labelling his remarks as irresponsible and detrimental to the state’s law and order situation.

BJP state media coordinator and MLA Randhir Sharma expressed his disapproval of the Chief Minister’s statement, wherein Sukhu reportedly mentioned that the police help tourists engaging in alcohol consumption reach hotels. Sharma asserted that such decisions and statements would worsen the already fragile law and order conditions in the state. He criticised the Chief Minister for using inappropriate language and argued that Sukhu’s words did not befit the stature of a Chief Minister, further implying that the statements could be interpreted as endorsing drug culture.

Sharma dubbed the Chief Minister’s remarks as unfortunate. He highlighted the apparent discrepancy in the legal treatment of tourists and locals, claiming that the statement indicated the adoption of a dual legal system in Himachal Pradesh.
The BJP representative raised fears that the Chief Minister’s statement might attract social and criminal elements, potentially disrupting the state’s law and order. He called upon the state government to retract the statement and urged the police to take necessary action.

In addition to the criticism of Sukhu’s statements, Randhir Sharma addressed the economic concerns, characterising the government’s one-year tenure as anti-people. He disclosed that despite securing a loan of Rs 12,000 crore in the last 12 months, the government treasury now held a mere Rs 23 crore. He cited a series of unfavourable economic decisions during the government’s tenure, including the denotification of over 1,000 institutions, a Rs 6 hike in diesel prices, a Rs 10 increase in the cost of cement bags, a 19 per cent rise in electricity prices and a substantial spike in stamp duty under the Revenue Department. He also criticised the government for terminating outsourced employees and imposing fees on temple devotees for ‘darshan’.
