Kinnaur:

A pilgrimage turned tragic on Janmashtami as a couple from Delhi lost their lives after being struck by falling boulders near the revered Shri Krishna Temple at Yula Kanda in Kinnaur.
The duo, devotees on their way for darshan, was caught in a sudden rockfall from the hillside, which was triggered by relentless monsoon in Himachal Pradesh.

The Tapri police were informed about the incident and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site, but the couple could not be saved. Villagers also rushed to the scene to assist emergency personnel.
This latest tragedy adds to the mounting toll of lives lost during this year’s monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh. Between June 20 and August 20, a total of 257 deaths have been recorded.

Of these, 124 were due to road accidents while others were caused by floods, landslides and cloudbursts. Another 331 individuals have sustained injuries and 37 remain missing.

The destruction has not spared property or livestock either. Over 2,726 houses and shops have been damaged, 2,157 cow sheds destroyed and 1,625 domestic animals have perished. The state has reported financial damages amounting to over Rs 2,144 crore.

Chandigarh-Manali National Highway among 376 roads blocked

As rains persist, key roads and infrastructure remain severely affected. The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway has been closed once again due to landslides at multiple points, including Nine Mile, Jagar Nullah, Pandoh Dam and Jogni Mata Temple. Overflowing drains and mudslides have left vehicles stranded, with relief efforts stalled due to ongoing rainfall.

In Mandi district alone, over 200 roads, 450 electricity transformers, and 44 water supply schemes are currently non-operational. Statewide, 376 roads, 524 transformers and 145 water schemes are down as of Saturday morning.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across Himachal Pradesh until August 22, with a yellow alert for heavy showers between August 16 and 19 in certain parts.
