Mandi:
The recent natural calamity that struck the Seraj region of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh has not spared even prominent figures. BJP Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur’s ancestral home at Tandi village has been partially damaged in the aftermath of heavy rains and landslides.
According to reports, the toilet and cowshed adjacent to the ancestral house were damaged, and the cowshed had to be evacuated. Cracks have also appeared in the ancestral house and the neighbouring structure. Jai Ram Thakur had lived in this house for many years before building a new residence nearby.
Currently, Jai Ram Thakur’s second elder brother Biri Singh resides in the ancestral home with his family. Just downhill from the house, his eldest brother, Anant Ram, had also constructed a new house, which is now reported to be at risk due to landslide in the area.
The damage was triggered by intense rainfall on June 30 and July 1, which caused a portion of the nearby road to collapse, leading to cracks in the homes. In response, authorities have attempted to mitigate further danger by placing tarpaulin sheets at the landslide-prone site.
On Thursday, Jai Ram Thakur visited his ancestral home to inspect the damage and check on his family members. He then proceeded to assess the broader impact of the disaster in the Seraj region. Sources say both his brothers continue to live in the affected houses, though during periods of heavy rainfall, they temporarily shift to Jai Ram Thakur’s newer home for safety.
The incident highlights the widespread and indiscriminate damage caused by the monsoon fury in the state, affecting not only common citizens but also senior political leaders and their families.
