PALAMPUR: Nestled just 4 km from the serene hill town of Palampur in Kangra district, along the banks of the snow-fed Neugel Khud, lies one of Himachal Pradesh’s most treasured gems — the Saurabh Van Vihar. This scenic nature park, spread over 13 km in the quaint village of Kwat, is more than just a weekend getaway. It stands as a living tribute to Captain Saurabh Kalia, the brave Indian Army officer who was martyred in the Kargil War, and whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations.

Originally developed with the aim of raising awareness about environmental conservation, Saurabh Van Vihar today beautifully intertwines ecological significance with national pride.

Managed by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, the park has grown into a vibrant tourist destination, attracting families, bird watchers, nature enthusiasts and patriots alike. It now features picnic sheds, tranquil water bodies, health trails, a Bambusetum, Tiger Hill Bridge and even an open-air theatre, making it a complete experience for mind and soul.

Gateway to Himachali culture

Framed by the snow-capped Dhauladhar range, the park is home to a stunning variety of trees, shrubs, birds and over 150 species of medicinal plants. Birdwatching, boating and bouldering are favorite activities here, while the pebbly banks of the Neugel Khud offer a peaceful setting for reflection or riverside walks. The on-site Café Monal serves as a perfect spot to unwind with snacks and views.

Beyond the park, visitors can explore the charming Kandi Villages — Sukandi, Drugun Kandi, and Thala Kandi — easily reachable via the Neugel Khad bridges. These quiet hamlets offer a peek into local life and are ideal for those seeking solitude or cultural immersion.

Whether you visit to honour a hero, enjoy nature or simply disconnect from the chaos of city life, Saurabh Van Vihar promises a soul-soothing escape — where every leaf whispers a story of bravery, beauty and balance with nature.
