Dharamshala, Kangra: The Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (HPPCB) celebrated its golden jubilee year on December 21, 2024, marking 50 years of its establishment.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled the golden jubilee environmental calendar and released a commemorative logo, inscribed on a memento, at a ceremony held after the conclusion of the winter session of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in Dharamshala.
The Chief Minister congratulated the Board on its remarkable journey since its inception on December 21, 1974, and lauded its dedication to preserving the environment. He extended his best wishes for the Board’s continued commitment to environmental protection.
The commemorative logo will be prominently used on all official correspondence over the next year, symbolising five decades of the HPPCB’s service. The environmental calendar outlines 50 activities to be held on environmentally significant days between December 21, 2024, and December 21, 2025. These events aim to promote awareness and foster a culture of conservation throughout the state.
Regional offices and laboratories across 20 locations in Himachal Pradesh also marked the occasion with cleanliness drives around their premises, underscoring the Board’s focus on environmental stewardship.
The HPPCB was constituted following the promulgation of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and started its operations from the Public Works Department office. Over the years, it relocated multiple times, eventually settling at Phase-III, Himuda Colony, New Shimla, in 2001, which remains its headquarters.
A special commemorative event is planned for January or February 2025 to honour retired employees, whose contributions have been instrumental in the Board’s success. A coffee table book and a commemorative video chronicling the Board’s journey will also be released during the event.
Over the past 50 years, the HPPCB has significantly expanded its technical and scientific capabilities as well as its environmental infrastructure, enabling it to tackle evolving challenges with efficiency and transparency. This milestone marks a proud moment in its journey of environmental conservation and sustainable development.
