Dharamshala: The political dynamics in Himachal Pradesh are witnessing a shift as new voices gain prominence. On Wednesday, during an intense discussion in the Assembly, Congress MLAs Suresh Kumar (Bhoranj) and Sanjay Awasthy (Arki) staunchly defended the government’s two-year performance. On the other hand, BJP leaders Randheer Sharma and Satpal Singh Satti aggressively criticized the Congress over alleged governance lapses.
Health Scam vs. KCC Bank Settlement
The corruption debate became a battleground for mutual accusations. Congress legislators brought up the alleged health scam from the previous BJP government’s tenure. The focus was on the controversial PPE kit procurement scandal, which had forced the BJP to remove its then health minister. Congress targeted BJP State President Rajeev Bindal, questioning his role during the episode.
In response, BJP highlighted the KCC Bank settlement controversy under the Congress-led government. BJP MLAs accused Congress of misusing the one-time settlement scheme by waiving ₹3 crore in favor of MLA Satpal Raizada. They argued that the policy was designed to benefit the needy, not influential figures with political connections.
New Leaders Gain Spotlight
While veterans like Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur continue to dominate the larger narrative, Wednesday’s session showcased the rising prominence of younger leaders. Suresh Kumar and Sanjay Awasthy proved themselves as capable defenders of the Congress, while Randheer Sharma and Satpal Satti stood firm in questioning the government’s accountability.
The Road Ahead
The corruption debate reflected the growing ideological and political divide between Himachal’s two main parties. While Congress sought to shift the focus to BJP’s past missteps, BJP pressed for transparency and action on the current administration’s alleged favoritism.
As Himachal’s political landscape evolves, these new voices may play a key role in shaping future debates and policies.
