The Himachal Pradesh High Court has once again upheld justice for Dr. Anupama Singh, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Sardar Patel University. The state Congress government had moved an application to vacate the stay on her appointment. This was the fourth such application by state government moved in court.
The Case History
The controversy surrounding Dr. Singh’s tenure began shortly after the Congress government assumed office. It promptly cancelled the deputations of Sardar Patel University’s Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor—directing them to return to their parent institution, Himachal Pradesh University.
Dr. Singh sought legal recourse, citing that her three-year appointment had been authorized by the state’s Governor. The High Court ruled in her favor, granting a stay order that allowed her to continue in her role.
The next hearing has been scheduled for March 2025—just a month before Dr. Singh’s tenure ends in April 2025.
In an exclusive interaction with Newz Radar, Dr. Singh expressed her gratitude towards the judiciary. “This decision not only vindicates my position but also reaffirms the sanctity of academic freedom and the rule of law,” she said.
Dr. Singh is approaching the end of her tenure.
Leaving apart this case, Himachal Pradesh has slipped to 21st position in quality of education and society is discussing that the politicization of educational institutions and the need to protect them from undue interference.
Deadline of SPU Building Transfer to pvt college passes
The controversial decision to transfer the Sardar Patel University (SPU) building in Sundernagar to Maharaja Lakshman Sen Memorial (MLSM) College reached a crucial juncture today as the deadline of December 13 passed without the transfer being executed. The directive, issued by the Directorate of Higher Education, had set this date for SPU to hand over the building, but resistance from university officials and local representatives has stalled the process.
