Heroin, Rs 40 lakh cash seized from passenger of luxury bus near Dharamshala

Dharamshala police have seized a substantial cache of narcotics and cash totalling Rs 40 lakh from a private Volvo bus.

The police arrested a local resident of Gamru in connection with the recovery and have initiated further legal proceedings.

According to reports, the police team, led by Dharamshala SHO Narayan Singh, was conducting routine patrols when they spotted two individuals unloading boxes from a private Volvo bus near the HRTC workshop on Cantt Road.

Upon questioning, the individuals failed to provide a satisfactory explanation about the contents of the boxes. The police then conducted a search, uncovering Rs 40 lakh in cash, nine grams of heroin and one gram of opium.

The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the accused, identified as Rakesh (45), son of Satish Kumar, a resident of Gamru under Dharamshala post office in Kangra district.

To verify the cash amount, the officers used a note-counting machine on the spot. Alongside the cash and drugs, the seized boxes also contained electrical items.

Increased surveillance on private buses from other states

Kangra ASP Bir Bahadur stated that the police have been monitoring private buses arriving in Dharamshala from Delhi and other states as these vehicles transport significant volumes of goods daily.

“This recent arrest has underscored the need for closer inspections,” he said, emphasising that similar checks would continue in the future to curb drug trafficking and illegal activities in the area.
