Himachal Pradesh is experiencing drought-like conditions due to a significant lack of rainfall over the past month. Farmers across the state, particularly those cultivating mustard and wheat, are facing difficulties irrigating their crops as the water supply dwindles. From October 1 to 22, the state recorded a 97 per cent less rainfall than normal, aggravating the already dire situation.
The meteorological department has forecast clear weather across the state until October 28, with only a slight chance of bad weather today in a few high-altitude areas. With sunny skies expected to continue, the maximum temperature is likely to rise further, increasing concerns about the ongoing drought.

Clear weather in Shimla and beyond
Himachal capital Shimla woke up to clear skies today as the dry spell following the monsoon’s departure continues. The rainfall has been scarce even before the monsoon withdrawal, with the state receiving 18 per cent less rain than normal during the monsoon season.
This prolonged dry spell is now intensifying drought conditions, particularly in areas like Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kullu, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur, which have recorded 100 per cent less rainfall than the October average.
Kangra, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts have also been hit hard, with rainfall deficits of 94 per cent, 98 per cent and 99 per cent, respectively. Mandi has received 81 per cent less rain while Una experienced a 46 per cent shortfall. The prolonged dry weather is proving to be a major challenge for farmers in the plains, who are struggling to find sufficient water for their crops.
While rainfall remains elusive, temperatures across Himachal Pradesh continue to fluctuate. In Shimla, the minimum temperature was recorded at 11.2°C while other areas such as Sundernagar, Bhuntar and Dharamshala saw minimum temperatures of 11.4°C, 9.5°C, and 14.9°C, respectively. Kalpa recorded 4.6°C, Keylong 3.1°C and Kukumseri 1.5°C. Tabo even dropped below freezing with -1.2°C.
