MANDI: Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a transformation in its government schools where the traditional teaching methods are being replaced by modern, technology-driven approaches. This shift has been propelled by the state government’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of education.
In the Drang-2 block of Mandi district’s Padhar subdivision, primary school students are now learning in the English medium, utilising LED screens and projectors in smart classrooms.
Technology driving educational change
As education adapts to the needs of the 21st century, the integration of advanced technology in classrooms has become crucial. Gone are the days when students relied on slates, wooden boards and ink pens.

Instead, they are now equipped with cutting-edge tools that make learning more interactive and effective. The Himachal Pradesh government has taken significant steps to provide a conducive learning environment and state-of-the-art facilities from the foundational level, ensuring that young learners in government schools benefit from smart classrooms equipped with LED screens.
Initiatives yield positive results
The impact of these initiatives is now visible on the ground. Mandi district is one of the areas witnessing this transformation. In the Drang region, students from pre-primary to fifth grade are receiving education through modern methods. The Government Central Model Primary School, Narla, is among the schools offering English-medium instruction. This institution, which now operates smart classrooms, has seen its enrollment rise to 112 students this year, up from the previous year’s figures.
According to Block Education Officer Kamlesh Kumari, a total of 2,096 students in the Drang block are learning through advanced technology during the 2024-25 academic session. Out of the 95 schools in the Drang-2 block, nearly 90% now offer English-medium education. Twenty of these schools, designated as Government Central Excellence Primary Schools, are equipped with smart classrooms featuring LED screens and projectors.
Parents express gratitude to govt
Parents of the students have expressed their appreciation for the state government’s efforts to improve education. Kamlesh and Santosh Thakur, residents of Padhar, shared that their daughter attends the Government Central Model Primary School in Narla. They highlighted that their daughter now receives English-medium instruction at an affordable cost in a government school, along with the added benefit of smart classroom facilities.
