SHIMLA: With the withdrawal of the monsoon from Himachal Pradesh, the state is witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures, particularly in lower and mid-hill areas.
As the rains cease, the mountains have begun to heat up once again, with three cities recording temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that this trend will continue over the next four to five days, as no rain is forecast until at least October 7.
According to the latest IMD reports, the state’s average temperature remains 2 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year. Una recorded the highest temperature at 35.8 degrees, followed by Bilaspur at 35.5 degrees and Tabo at 35.6 degrees. Even Keylong, typically known for its cooler climate, has seen an unprecedented spike, with temperatures soaring to 23.4 degrees, a 7 degrees increase from the normal average.

The spike is not limited to these cities alone. Bilaspur’s temperature is 4 degrees above its usual, while Shimla is 1.2 degrees higher. Sundernagar and Una are 2.5 degrees above normal, Bhuntar and Dharamshala by 2.6 degrees, Kangra by 2.6 degrees and Mandi by 1.1 degrees. Manali has seen a smaller increase of 0.5 degrees, but the overall heatwave is affecting much of the state.
While the plains are sweltering, popular tourist destinations such as Shimla, Manali, Kufri, Narkanda, Dalhousie and Rohtang are still enjoying relatively pleasant weather. However, the cold that typically begins to set in is delayed this season.
According to the weather department, cooler temperatures will only return after significant rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches of the state, both of which seem unlikely in the immediate future.
As of now, the minimum temperature across Himachal is also 1.3 degrees above normal, leaving residents and tourists to endure a warmer-than-usual early October.
