Leopard on the prowl in Mandi town, fear grips residents
Caught on CCTV, residents demand immediate action from forest department
MANDI: A leopard has been roaming between Pulgharat and Gaushala villages near Mandi town, sparking fear among the residents. The animal has been sighted in Ward No. 5 (Ramnagar) and Ward No. 6 (Sanyardi) and has killed several pet dogs over the past month.
With the situation intensifying, locals have called upon the authorities to step in before the predator causes more damage.
The leopard’s presence was recently confirmed when it was caught on CCTV footage outside the house of Sanjay Kumar, a driver employed with the HRTC. The video shows the leopard entering the courtyard and surveying the area.
Sanjay, along with other residents, including Roshan Lal, Ram Lal, Hari Singh, Jai Singh, Rajkumar, Pawan Guleria, Chaman Lal and Suaru Ram, reported that the leopard has already killed several pet dogs.

Parents not letting kids play in open
While the loss of pets has been alarming, the primary concern now is for human safety. Villagers fear the predator may soon target children, women or even adults. The atmosphere in Pulgharat is tense, with families afraid to let their children venture outdoors.
During the day, residents are forced to move in groups, and by nightfall, they lock themselves indoors, fearing an attack.
“This area is very close to the city, and many of us have to travel between our village and the town, even during the night. We’re terrified that the leopard might attack one of us,” a worried local resident shared.
The residents have now turned to the forest department for help, urging them to capture the leopard before it strikes again. They have requested that a trap be placed to safely catch the animal and relocate it to either a dense forest or a zoo. “We can’t live like this anymore. The leopard needs to be caught and moved to a safer location, or someone’s life could be at risk,” said one of the villagers.
