Restore faith in khaki, rebuild trust between Himachal public and police
IPS officer accused of misusing official pilot vehicle in Delhi for wife’s personal use
Shimla/Dharamshala: In a recent case, an IPS (Indian Police Service) officer posted at the state headquarters in Shimla was accused of misusing his position to secure an official police vehicle for his wife’s personal use in New Delhi. The issue was reported by Hindi daily ‘Punjab Kesari’ on its social media handle on Sunday.
The reputation of the Himachal Pradesh Police has come under scrutiny and decisive action is needed to restore public faith. A few months ago, a Palampur-based businessman brought an issue to light involving the then Director General of Police (DGP) of Himachal Pradesh.
In the latest case involving a top IPS officer, the vehicle in question was a pilot security car, intended for the service of VVIPs such as the Himachal Pradesh Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister or the High Court Chief Justice. The IPS officer’s wife reportedly used the vehicle for several days when it was not required by these dignitaries.
Reinforce respect for law
Respect for the law stems either from reverence or fear of its enforcement. The police are the primary agency responsible for upholding the law. However, incidents like these cast a shadow on the integrity of the ‘khaki.’ To maintain law and order among the masses, it is crucial to restore faith in the police force.
Report in DGP case pending release
The businessman who levelled allegations against the then DGP tarnished the police force’s image. An investigation conducted by IPS officer Santosh Patial, following orders by the high court, is yet to be disclosed to the public. The release of this report is expected to provide factual insights into the case, allowing the public to understand what exactly transpired.
Police band’s popularity a source of pride
India boasts numerous singers and musicians, but the Himachal police band, ‘Harmony of the Pines’, gained popularity partly due to khaki uniform. When singers and musicians perform in their police attire, it fills people with energy and enthusiasm, promoting a sense of national pride.
Hardworking cops deserve respect
It is a common scene where police stations are short of staff. The police personnel posted there work hard to ensure that public issues get addressed. Therefore, restoring respect for the police uniform is not just about addressing individual cases of misconduct, but it’s also about reinforcing the values of integrity and service that khaki stands for, ensuring that the public can once again trust those who wear it.
