After facing several setbacks, Bollywood actor and Mandi BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s much-discussed directorial debut ‘Emergency’ now has been scheduled for official release. The actor-filmmaker revealed her film ‘Emergency’ release date.
On the morning of November 18, 2024, Kangana posted a new poster of ‘Emergency’ on social media, showcasing herself in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The poster also features Vishak Nair as Indira’s son Sanjay Gandhi, Anupam Kher as Janata Party leader Jai Prakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
In the caption, she wrote, “17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. #Emergency – Unveils only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!” The new release comes just ahead of Republic Day, though Sky Force, an action movie with Akshay Kumar, is set to release during the holiday weekend.
Emergency has stirred up controversy for some time, facing pushback from several Sikh organisations. The political drama explores the turbulent 21-month Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Opposition from certain groups led the Central Board of Film Certification to withdraw its certification, postponing the initial release date, which was set for September 5.
Kangana shared her frustration over this, saying, “This film has been a labour of love, made with a massive budget and little support from the industry. Zee Studios and other partners have invested heavily in ‘Emergency’, and these delays are resulting in substantial losses. I believe the Censor Board should prioritise this film’s release.”
Co-produced by Zee Studios and Kangana’s Manikarnika Films, ‘Emergency’ is Kangana’s second venture as a director, following her 2019 historical drama ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’, which she co-directed with Krish.
