MANDI:
A potentially fatal rafting incident was narrowly avoided on Monday evening near Bhuntar in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh after a raft carrying tourists was caught in the strong currents of Beas river. Thanks to swift intervention by the district administration and emergency response teams, all tourists were rescued safely.
Officials said the raft lost control amid the river’s heavy flow, creating panic among those on board. Upon receiving information, teams from the Kullu police along with trained rescue personnel immediately reached the site. With darkness approaching, the rescue operation was carried out on priority, and all stranded tourists were pulled out of the river and moved to a secure location.
Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Ravish confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident. She stated that the alertness of the rescue teams and coordinated efforts helped avert a major disaster.
Safety guidelines allegedly ignored by raft operator
Initial findings indicate that the rafting operator failed to adhere to mandatory safety guidelines prescribed for water sports activities. Conducting rafting during evening hours, when visibility remains poor, is against established norms. The lapse reportedly exposed tourists to serious danger.
The district administration has taken the matter seriously and initiated action against the operator concerned. The police have registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Water Sports Rules, and further investigation is underway.
Strict action warned against violators
The Deputy Commissioner said that tourist safety remained the top priority and any violation of safety regulations would invite stringent action. Operators flouting rules may face licence cancellation along with legal proceedings.
The Kullu administration has also issued fresh advisories to all adventure sports operators, directing them to conduct activities only during approved hours and under favourable weather conditions. Tourists have also been urged to opt for registered operators and trained guides while participating in adventure sports.
