Inter-College Badminton Tournament Concludes at Rajiv Gandhi Government College ,Shimla

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Memorial Government College, Hamirpur clinches the HPU Inter-College Badminton Championship for the third consecutive year

The Himachal Pradesh University Inter-College Badminton Tournament concluded on Friday at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Chaura Maidan (Kotshera), Shimla, after three thrilling days of matches held from October 15 to 17, 2025. The tournament witnessed enthusiasm, energy, and high-level competition, with 44 college teams from across the state participating.

Principal Dr. Gopal Chauhan welcomed all the guests and participants, expressing pride that the college continues to excel at the state level by providing new opportunities in sports. He emphasized that victory and defeat are part of the game, but participation is the most important aspect, as sports help students develop discipline and determination.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Dev Anand Verma, Chairman, APMC (Shimla & Kinnaur), graced the closing ceremony. In his address, he said that sports are not merely about winning or losing but teach discipline, confidence, and teamwork—qualities essential for success in every sphere of life. Recalling his own days as a national-level boxer who won a bronze medal, he mentioned the lack of sports infrastructure in earlier times, which made it difficult to pursue sports as a career. He appreciated the Himachal Pradesh Government for providing modern facilities and opportunities for today’s youth. He announced a cash reward of ₹21,000 for the players and urged them to stay away from drugs and embrace sports as a positive force in life.

The third-place match was played between Government College Sanjauli and Government College Nahan, in which Sanjauli College displayed excellent performance and secured victory with a 3–0 margin. The final match between Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Kotshera, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Memorial Government College, Hamirpur, was an exciting and closely contested battle that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

In the first singles match, Shivansh (Hamirpur) defeated Suryansh (Kotshera) 2–1 to give Hamirpur an early lead. In the second singles, Karan Sharma (Kotshera) outplayed Ary Mehta (Hamirpur) in straight sets, bringing both teams level. The doubles match between Suryansh and Anmol (Kotshera) and Shivansh and Pranav (Hamirpur) was full of energy and suspense, but Hamirpur eventually prevailed to regain the lead. In the reverse singles, Akshay Dhiman (Hamirpur) produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Anmol Kalia (Kotshera), securing the championship title for Hamirpur. With this 3–1 series win, Government College Hamirpur lifted the trophy for the third consecutive year, marking a historic hat-trick in the Himachal Pradesh University inter-college badminton championship.

The event was graced by several distinguished guests, including Mr. Devender Kanwar (International Volleyball Player & SDO Electricity), Dr. Lokender (Rocky) (MS, DDU), Dr. Raj Kumar (Principal, RKMV Kotla Khurd, Una & University Observer), Dr. Kamini Bisht (Principal, Jawaharlal Nehru Fine Arts College, Shimla), Dr. Satish Sharma (Volleyball Coach), Mr. Balwant Jhota (Vice President, HP Badminton Association), Mr. Arvind Tegta (APMC Member), Ms. Shipra Sood (Branch Manager, Indian Bank), Ms. Simpi Verma (Junior Engineer, Electricity Department), and Mr. Abhay Lakhanpal (Table Tennis Coach). PTA President Mr. Kamal Lohia, Vice President Mr. Rajesh Thakur, Dean Student Welfare Dr. P.D. Kaushal, and Research and Development Cell Coordinator Dr. Rakesh Sharma were also present.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Organising Secretary Dr. Vinod Kumar extended heartfelt gratitude to all the guests, officials, players, and staff members. He also expressed special thanks to Indian Bank, HP Badminton Association, Akash Books, R.D. Publications, VK Global, Pradeep Publications, and New Era Graphics for their support in making the event successful. He said that the success of the tournament was the result of the collective effort and dedication of the entire college fraternity and appreciated the active participation of NCC, NSS, and Rover-Ranger students who played an important role in organising the event smoothly.
