Shimla: With the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup scheduled to be hosted in India later this year, five promising players from the state have earned spots in the final selection camp for the national team.
The final selection camp for the Indian women’s kabaddi team will feature five players from Himachal Pradesh — Jyoti Thakur, Pushpa Rana, Bhawana, Champa and Sakshi.
These athletes earlier participated in the national training camp held from May 10 to 30 where they showcased strong coordination and skill alongside players from across the country.
Although the Indian squad was originally expected to be finalised after the camp, the delay in announcing the official dates for the World Cup has pushed back the selection.
Initially planned for June 1 to 10 in Bihar, the tournament is now expected to take place in July. The Indian team will be finalised in the last week of June following another national camp, to be organised by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India.
Coach Pooja Thakur from the SAI Centre of Excellence, Dharamshala, expressed optimism, stating that four to five players from the state are strong contenders for the final Indian team. These athletes also have a track record, with four of them having contributed to India’s gold medal victory in the Asian Kabaddi Championship.
