In a major boost to digital education and innovation, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced the introduction of degree courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science at Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Nagrota Bagwan. This move is part of the state’s larger plan to position itself as a growing Information Technology (IT) hub and to equip youth with future-ready skills.
Alongside this academic upgrade, the government also plans to establish a Digital University of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Skill and Vocational Studies at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district, through a public-private partnership and self-financing model.
Himachal to become digital powerhouse
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state is rolling out a host of reforms and initiatives aimed at preparing its youth for emerging technologies and boosting employment opportunities in the tech sector, a government spokesperson said.
“With the rise in demand for professionals in artificial intelligence, data science and drone technology, Himachal is making consistent efforts to prepare a skilled workforce capable of meeting national and global industry needs,” said the Chief Minister.
Key initiatives in education & technology
• AI and Data Science courses at Nagrota Bagwan
Rajiv Gandhi Government College will now offer degree-level courses in AI and data science, aimed at creating job-ready graduates in high-demand sectors.
• New technical courses
Other institutions across the state will also see course upgrades:
o Civil Engineering degree at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Engineering and Technology, Pragatinagar (Shimla)
o Diploma in Computer Science & Engineering (AI & Machine Learning) at Government Polytechnic, Sundernagar (Mandi)
Necessary faculty and infrastructure will be provided to ensure smooth implementation.
• Drone technology push
The state is set to launch drone taxi services this fiscal year to improve connectivity in remote areas, facilitating transport of agricultural produce and medical supplies.
Drone stations will be set up in Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra districts to support agriculture, healthcare and disaster management. In 2024-25, 243 youth have already been trained in drone operations through various government ITIs.
Digital university to nurture innovation
The Digital university in Ghumarwin will focus on entrepreneurship, vocational training and skill development, acting as a catalyst for startups and tech innovation in the state.
To further foster innovation, the state government is also setting up a Rs 2 crore Innovation Fund aimed at helping young innovators turn their ideas into scalable enterprises.
With these initiatives, the state government aims to create a robust ecosystem for technological advancement, skill development and self-employment. “These steps will not only create new career opportunities for our youth but also drive the economic transformation of Himachal Pradesh,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.
