Shimla: In a remarkable achievement, two Assistant Professors from Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Dr Ranbir Singh Thakur and Dr Manish Khangta, have been granted an international design patent by the Intellectual Property Office, Government of the United Kingdom. The patent is for their interdisciplinary innovation titled “Energy Harvesting Smart Shoes Insole”.
This cutting-edge invention, developed in collaboration with researchers from Maharaja Agrasen University, Himachal Pradesh, features a fully functional prototype that transforms kinetic energy — generated during walking or running — into usable electrical energy. Using advanced piezoelectric materials and innovative energy conversion mechanisms, the insole stores this energy in an inbuilt battery.
The device is designed to charge mobile phones, fitness trackers and other smart gadgets, offering a sustainable, portable charging solution without the need for traditional power sources.
One of the most striking aspects of the insole is its versatility, it can be easily inserted into any type of shoe, making it highly accessible for users from all walks of life.
The patent marks a significant step in wearable technology and green energy innovation, with immense potential for real-world applications.
Dr Ranbir Singh Thakur is no stranger to innovation. He previously secured design patents for the “Employee Behaviour Tracking Chair” and a Digital Billboard in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
A staunch advocate of interdisciplinary research, Dr Thakur has also completed a solar power installation course at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Calicut. With over 40 published research papers, 60+ seminar participations, and four authored books, he continues to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
Dr Manish Khangta brings to the project a strong foundation in interdisciplinary studies aimed at solving global challenges. He has published 28 research papers, authored three books, and presented his work at prominent academic conferences in Dubai, Singapore, Sharjah, and Malaysia.
The Vice-Chancellor of HPU, Prof Mahavir Singh, and Registrar Gian Sagar Negi extended their congratulations to both professors, praising their achievement as a proud moment for the university and a milestone in sustainable technology development. This international recognition not only highlights the innovative potential of Indian academia but also reflects the growing global impact of homegrown research in science and technology.
