Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who assumed office in December 2022, displayed a confident and strategic approach during Wednesday’s assembly proceedings. The session, which allowed a Rule 67 discussion on corruption, saw Sukhu navigate the BJP’s allegations with poise and political acumen.
Sukhu’s demeanor was notably different from his initial appearances as Chief Minister in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. His calm and smiling responses during the heated debates reflected a seasoned politician comfortable in his role.
Countering Allegations Amid BJP’s Rally
The day was politically charged, as the BJP had scheduled its “Akrosh Rally” at Dharamshala’s Zorawar Stadium, coinciding with the assembly’s corruption debate. Sukhu, however, garnered attention for allowing the discussion despite it targeting his government. Observers credited this move as a clever tactic to showcase his openness to scrutiny while keeping the BJP occupied in the assembly.
Sukhu repeatedly called out Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, urging him to actively participate in the discussion. Thakur, however, left the house to address the rally, leaving BJP MLAs to carry on the debate in his absence.
Demand for Evidence
Throughout the session, Sukhu intervened during BJP legislators’ speeches, challenging them to back their allegations with evidence. Addressing the Speaker, Sukhu requested that opposition members submit documentary proof of their claims. Acting on this, the Speaker directed BJP MLA Randheer Sharma to place relevant documents on record.
A Calculated Strategy
Political analysts noted Sukhu’s approach as a calculated strategy to assert his government’s confidence while deflecting BJP’s narrative. By allowing the corruption debate and maintaining his composure amid allegations, Sukhu positioned himself as a leader willing to confront challenges head-on.
Despite the BJP’s efforts to criticize his government during the rally and in the assembly, Sukhu’s handling of the session showcased a leader adept at managing both governance and political optics. His insistence on evidence further emphasized his attempt to shift the focus back on accountability, creating a challenging narrative for the opposition.
