New Delhi: A horrifying incident unfolded at a Dallas motel in the US when a 50-year-old Indian-origin manager was brutally beheaded in front of his wife and son following an argument over a malfunctioning washing machine.

Local authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspect, a colleague with a criminal background, who now faces capital murder charges.

The victim, Chandra Mouli “Bob” Nagamallaiah, originally from Karnataka in India, was managing the Downtown Suites motel when the confrontation occurred. The suspect, Yordanis Cobos-Martinez (37) allegedly became agitated after Nagamallaiah attempted to communicate instructions through a translator instead of addressing him directly.

According to the Dallas Police Department, surveillance cameras captured Cobos-Martinez arming himself with a machete and attacking Nagamallaiah. The victim ran toward the motel office where his wife and 18-year-old son were present, but the suspect followed and carried out the assault despite their desperate efforts to intervene.

Cobos-Martinez has a prior record, with past arrests in Houston for offences such as auto theft and assault. He is currently being held without bond. If convicted, he may face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, as per Texas law.

The Consulate General of India in Houston expressed condolences and stated it is closely monitoring the situation while extending support to the bereaved family. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), it said, “We are in contact with the family and are providing all necessary assistance. The accused is in police custody.”

Nagamallaiah, affectionately known as “Bob” in the local community, is remembered as a kind, hardworking man who deeply cared for his family and those around him. Friends described the killing as a deeply traumatic and unimaginable tragedy, particularly given that it occurred in front of his loved ones.

“This devastating act has shaken everyone who knew Bob,” a family friend was quoting as saying by a media house. “His wife and son tried to protect him, but nothing could have prepared them for such brutality.”

A fundraising campaign has been launched to assist the family with funeral expenses, living costs and the college education of Nagamallaiah’s son. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday as the community continues to rally around the grieving family in this time of immense loss.
