New Delhi: Investigators probing the November 10, 2025, blast near Red Fort metro station in Delhi that k*illed 12 persons and injured several others now suspect it was part of a larger terror plot aimed at targeting Republic Day celebrations, according to sources.
Officials believe the explosion on Monday evening was triggered prematurely and in haste after the conspirators’ original plan to strike during the high-security national event was disrupted.
Investigations have revealed that Dr Muzammil Ganai, a key suspect, conducted multiple reconnaissance visits around the Red Fort area earlier this year. Along with his associate Dr Umar Nabi, he reportedly studied the movement of crowds, security patterns and possible entry points at the historic monument, according to officials cited in media reports.
CCTV footage and mobile dump analysis confirm that both men frequented the site in January, ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. Police believe these recces were part of a coordinated effort to stage a major strike during the national parade.
Blast triggered in panic, say officials
According to preliminary findings, the white Hyundai i20 used in the blast had been parked for nearly 11 days inside the Al-Falah Medical College campus in Faridabad, Haryana. On the morning of November 10, suspect Umar Nabi allegedly drove the car out, apparently in panic, as security agencies intensified crackdown on terror modules.
Officials now suspect that the explosion was either accidental or premature as the bomb had not fully developed. Forensic experts said the device failed to cause a crater or release shrapnel, suggesting it detonated before reaching full explosive potential.
Delhi on high alert amid widening probe
In response to the incident, the Delhi Police have stepped up security across the national capital, deploying additional personnel at metro stations, markets and major transport hubs. Checkpoints have been reinforced at all major entry and exit points, including Ghazipur, Singhu, Tikri and Badarpur borders, where vehicles are being thoroughly inspected.
Senior officers are personally overseeing the enhanced security operations. “All district units have been directed to remain on high alert and intensify patrolling, particularly around tourist locations, malls and religious sites,” a senior police official said. “Public safety remains our top priority.”
Anti-sabotage squads, sniffer dogs and metal detectors have been stationed at sensitive spots, while coordination between Delhi Police, Intelligence Bureau and paramilitary forces continues. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police helplines immediately.
Security agencies say the alert level in Delhi will remain high until further notice as investigators continue to trace the wider network behind the foiled Republic Day terror plot.
