Two persons, including a 17-year-old boy, lost their lives after a Toyota Fortuner SUV from a convoy of BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Kaiserganj seat in Uttar Pradesh, Karan Bhushan Singh, hit their bike.
Karan is the son of six-time MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing allegations of sexual harassment from women wrestlers.
The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Rehan and his 24-year-old cousin Shahzade. According to the FIR filed by Rehan’s mother, Chanda Begum, the accident occurred around 9 am when the speeding SUV, coming from the opposite direction, collided with their bike. Both Rehan and Shahzade died instantly, while another person was injured and subsequently hospitalised.
Visuals from the accident scene showed the SUV with “police escort” written on its rear windscreen, indicating its role in a VIP convoy. The SUV has been seized by the police and its driver has been arrested.
However, it remains unconfirmed whether Karan Bhushan Singh was present in the convoy at the time of the accident.
The incident casts a further shadow on the Singh family, already embroiled in controversy. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Karan Bhushan’s father, made national headlines last year when prominent wrestlers accused him of sexually harassing women athletes.
A Delhi court recently framed charges against him in this case. The allegations are widely believed to have influenced the BJP’s decision to field his son Karan Bhushan Singh as the candidate instead of Brij Bhushan himself. The Singh family’s political influence extends to Gonda, where Brij Bhushan’s other son, Pratik Bhushan Singh, serves as an MLA.
The accident site has drawn a significant crowd, with the victims’ family members and local residents demanding justice. The incident has sparked outrage in the community, amplifying calls for accountability and stricter regulations on VIP convoys.
