In a bold move to protect the youth from the menace of drug addiction, the Thirot Mahila Mandal in Udaipur sub-division of Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh has announced a stringent measure to curb the peddling and consumption of drugs, including chitta (diluted form of heroin) and charas (hashish).
The committee has decided to impose a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh on anyone caught selling or consuming drugs within the Thirot panchayat area. Additionally, legal action will be initiated against offenders by filing a police complaint.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Thirot Mahila Mandal (women’s committee). The committee unanimously passed a resolution to tackle the growing drug problem in the region.

Mahila Mandal earlier fought against illegal felling

Mahila Mandal representatives emphasised that the initiative aimed to prevent the spread of drug abuse in Lahaul-Spiti, ensuring that substances like chitta and charas did not take root in the community.
This is not the first time the Thirot Women’s Committee has taken a proactive role in addressing social issues. Previously, the group successfully campaigned against illegal tree felling in the region, earning them a Rs 10,000 reward for their efforts.
Their active participation in environmental and social causes has made them a pivotal force in the area.
This initiative is expected to serve as a model for other regions grappling with similar challenges, demonstrating the power of collective action in tackling societal issues.
