MANDI: The tribal Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh has become a shining example of women-led governance, with seven women heading the district’s political, administrative and policing framework.
The tribal district has set a remarkable example by becoming the first district in the state — and one of the rare few in the country — where women are leading at every major level of governance and administration.
The historic development has taken place in the Mandi parliamentary constituency, represented by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, a Bollywood actor and a strong advocate of women empowerment.
The women currently in commanding role in Lahaul-Spiti are:
- Kangana Ranaut, BJP MP of Mandi constituency (Lahaul-Spiti is its part)
- Anuradha Rana, Congress MLA of Lahaul-Spiti
- Beena Devi, zila parishad chairperson
- Kiran Bhardana, newly appointed Deputy Commissioner
- Ilma Afroz, Superintendent of Police
- Akanksha Sharma, newly appointed Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Keylong
- Shikha, Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kaza
Both Kiran Bhardana and Akanksha Sharma were appointed just yesterday, completing this rare and powerful all-women administrative setup, a first in the history of Himachal Pradesh.
New era of women-led leadership
With political representation, district and police administration and key sub-divisions all headed by women, Lahaul-Spiti stands as a proud beacon of women empowerment.
Administrative experts believe such a complete women-led model is not only rare in Himachal, but possibly across India.
The presence of seven women leaders at the helm signals a new era of governance defined by inclusivity, strength and sensitivity. The change is also symbolic as MP Kangana Ranaut herself is a vocal supporter of women empowerment and leadership in public life.
Inspiring change across the state and the nation
The people of Lahaul-Spiti are optimistic that under this historic leadership team, the district will witness innovative governance and fast-paced development.
The all-women leadership is expected to set new benchmarks for others to follow, becoming a source of pride not just for Himachal Pradesh, but for the entire country.
