Hamirpur: Former Himachal Pradesh MLA Rajendra Rana has welcomed the High Court’s decision to hand over the investigation into the suspicious death of HPPCL engineer Vimal Negi to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), calling it a vital step towards justice and accountability.
Speaking to the press, Rana described the court’s directive as a “major victory for the truth,” and said it aligned with the demands made by the victim’s family, civil society groups, and the general public for an impartial probe.
“The public has consistently demanded transparency and fairness in this case. The High Court’s order has reaffirmed faith in our judiciary,” he stated.
Rana accused the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led state government of attempting to suppress the matter from the outset. He alleged that the investigation had been steered to protect certain individuals close to those in power. “From day one, it was clear that when influential names are involved, a neutral investigation by state agencies cannot be expected,” he said.
Highlighting discrepancies in the reports submitted by top government and police officials — including the Additional Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) — Rana said the contradictions pointed to deliberate attempts to obscure the truth. He labelled the investigation as “compromised at every level.”
“This is not just a suicide case,” he asserted. “It raises grave questions about the functioning of the state machinery and the government’s willingness to uphold justice.”
With the CBI now in charge, Rana expressed hope that the probe will finally uncover the truth and bring everyone involved — from minor players to top-level officials — under scrutiny. “The message must be loud and clear: no one is above the law,” he said.
He further urged the government to reflect on the public’s demand for accountability. “In a democracy, governance is judged by transparency and responsibility. The court’s decision is a reminder that ultimately, the system must answer to the people.”
Rana concluded by expressing confidence that the CBI would approach the case with the seriousness it demands and deliver justice to the Negi family.
