Shimla: The investigation into the mysterious death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited Chief Engineer Vimal Negi is gaining momentum, with the police interrogating two officials of the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) rank and seizing their mobile phones for forensic examination.
The police believe that data retrieved from these devices may provide crucial evidence to advance the case. Both officers had previously worked on the Una’s Pekhubela solar power project and were transferred to different locations only recently, raising further questions about their possible involvement or knowledge of the circumstances surrounding Negi’s death.
Vimal Negi was reported missing and was later found dead in the Gobind Sagar Lake, located in the Shah Talai area of Bilaspur. His family members have alleged that he was harassed and mistreated by senior officials of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, leading to a formal complaint being lodged at the New Shimla police station.
Top official summoned for questioning
Given the sensitivity of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to conduct a thorough inquiry. Earlier, the police questioned several project-related officials, including summoning 13 individuals just last week for interrogation.
The investigation has also drawn in former HPPCL Managing Director Harikesh Meena and suspended Director Deshraj, both of whom have been summoned for questioning. Meanwhile, another SIT unit is concurrently conducting inquiries in Bilaspur.
Forensic report says death occurred due to drowning
A report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory has confirmed that Negi died due to drowning, based on the results of a diatom test.
However, the police are continuing to explore the possibility of foul play, especially in light of the serious allegations made by the deceased’s family.
The investigation remains ongoing and the authorities are expected to uncover more details in the coming days as digital evidence is analysed.
