Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has appointed senior Congress leader Vidya Negi as the new Chairperson of the State Commission for Women, filling a position that had remained vacant for nearly two and a half years.
The appointment, which takes effect immediately, will be for a term of three years, according to an official notification issued by the government on Friday.
Vidya Negi hails from Shanag village under Bahang post office in the Manali area of Kullu district and currently serves as the national coordinator of the All India Mahila Congress. With her extensive experience in public service and women leadership roles within the Congress, her appointment has been widely welcomed, especially in her hometown.
Leadership backed by experience
Vidya Negi has held various organisational roles within the Congress over the years and is known for her advocacy on women’s rights and social justice. Her elevation to the post is seen as a significant move to strengthen the institutional support system for women in the state.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated Vidya Negi on her appointment and extended his best wishes. In a statement, he said, “This position plays a vital role in advancing women’s empowerment, ensuring justice and upholding their dignity in society. I am confident that Vidya Negi, with her experience, sensitivity and resolve, will take the functioning of the women’s commission to new heights and live up to the expectations of the women of Himachal Pradesh.”
Position vacant for over two years
The chairperson’s post had been lying vacant since early 2022, raising concerns among civil society groups about the state government’s commitment to gender issues. With Negi’s appointment, expectations are high for more proactive measures on women’s rights, safety and welfare.
Negi’s supporters and local residents in Manali have expressed joy and pride, with several political and social workers visiting her residence to extend their congratulations.
