MANDI: Sunishka Gupta, a bright student hailing from Kummi village in Balh Valley of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, has made her district and the state proud by being selected for the University Gold Medal by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
The prestigious medal is being awarded in recognition of her exceptional academic performance in the undergraduate Psychology (Honours) programme.
Sunishka will be felicitated during IGNOU’s 38th convocation on March 5, 2025, at the Convention Centre, IGNOU Campus, New Delhi. The university has officially communicated her selection, marking a moment of pride not just for her family but also for her community and state.
Academic Journey of Excellence
Her father DP Gupta, a senior journalist, expressed immense pride in his daughter’s achievement, while her mother, a school teacher, credited Sunishka’s discipline and determination for the success.
The news has sparked widespread happiness among family members, villagers and well-wishers. Sunishka’s success is rooted in years of dedication and hard work.
She began her educational journey at Beas View Model School, Baggi, where she completed her studies up to Class VIII. She then pursued her higher secondary education at Indus Global School, Mandi, where her interest in psychology started to take shape.
Her academic brilliance continued as she enrolled in the Psychology (Honours) undergraduate programme at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Delhi, where she excelled and ultimately earned the top distinction that led to her selection for the coveted University Gold Medal.
Pursuing excellence in mental health studies
With a vision to contribute to the field of mental health, Sunishka Gupta has secured admission to the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, for her Master’s in Mental Health.
Known as one of India’s oldest and most respected educational institutions, TISS offers a highly competitive program and Sunishka emerged successful among thousands of candidates from India and abroad.
She is notably the only student from Himachal Pradesh to be selected for this specialised programme. Her admission followed a rigorous selection process, including the Central Universities Entrance Test (CUET), personal interviews and a highly competitive merit evaluation.
Interestingly, Sunishka was also selected for the Indian Institute of Psychological Research, Bengaluru, but she chose TISS-Mumbai due to its legacy and reputation in the field of mental health studies.
Sunishka Gupta’s journey from a small village in Mandi to the prestigious halls of TISS-Mumbai serves as an inspiration for students across Himachal Pradesh.
