Mohali
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a 24-hour symbolic hunger strike at Himachal Pradesh University’s Regional Centre in Mohali, protesting incomplete infrastructure and what they termed “stepmotherly treatment” by the university administration and the state government.
ABVP Himachal Pradesh State Co-Minister Abhinav Chaudhary said that despite being the only regional centre of the university, the Mohali campus lacks basic facilities such as hostels, an auditorium, and proper grounds. “Students come here from every corner of the state with hope, but when they see the dilapidated entrance and neglected infrastructure, they wonder if their decision to study here was a mistake,” he remarked.
Chaudhary accused the administration of ignoring the centre since its inception, adding that the campus resembles “a shelter for stray animals rather than a university.” He criticized the Vice Chancellor for failing to deliver on promises made during his visit five months ago, noting that “not even a single brick has been laid” since.
The students also demanded the immediate resumption of long-suspended student union elections, as well as the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). ABVP warned that if their demands are not met, they are prepared to escalate the protest into a more aggressive movement, including campus lockouts.
