Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi has been stationed in Shimla for the last three days and was joined by her son Rahul Gandhi late on Friday (November 22, 2024) even as his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday won her maiden Lok Sabha election from Wayanad in Kerala.
The mother-son duo has been putting up at Priyanka’s house in Chharabra, near Shimla, from whether they monitored the results of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, besides byelections to 48 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies.
Sources indicate that Sonia’s visit may have been due to the poor air quality in Delhi, which entered the “severe plus” AQI zone in recent days.
During Diwali as well, the Gandhi family — Priyanka, Sonia and Rahul — celebrated the festival in Chharabra, showcasing their family’s fondness for the retreat.
The Chharabra residence, nestled about 10 km from Shimla, is reportedly valued at approximately Rs 4.63 crore. Surrounded by serene valleys and known for heavy snowfall in winter, the location has become a favoured escape for the family.
Meanwhile, Priyanka has been leading in Wayanad with over 5.78 lakh votes. Communist Party of India’s Sathyan Mokeri is trailing with over 1.95 lakh votes while the BJP’s Navya Haridas is in the third spot with nearly 1.04 lakh votes. Priyanka has already surpassed Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin of 3.65 lakh votes in the 2024 elections. This is despite a decline in voter turnout.
