MANDI (Munish Sood)
In a bold move to prioritise education and student development, the Himachal Pradesh government has imposed a strict ban on creating non-educational videos and social media reels within school premises.
The directive, issued by the Himachal Pradesh Director of Higher Education, Amarjeet Sharma, comes as part of a larger effort to safeguard academic integrity and channel student energy into meaningful pursuits.
The decision, hailed by educationists, addresses the rising trend of teachers and staff creating videos during school hours that offer no educational value and often distract students. “These activities not only divert attention from academic goals but also encourage unnecessary social media usage, which can be harmful to young minds,” noted a senior official from the education department.
Schools are for learning, not filming, says govt
Under the new rules, teachers and staff are explicitly prohibited from making videos or reels that do not contribute to educational knowledge, sports, co-curricular activities or the holistic development of students.
School principals and institutional heads have been directed to enforce the ban rigorously and adopt preventive measures to curb such activities.
Sharma emphasised, “The primary goal is to refocus students’ energy on academics, sports and co-curricular activities, ensuring their growth as responsible citizens and compassionate human beings.”
Crackdown after misuse of teaching hours
The crackdown was prompted by reports of increasing instances where educators misused school time for creating non-educational content, often drawing students into the process.
The directive warns that such distractions not only impact academic performance but also shift students’ attention away from nation-building activities and personal development.
Instead of such activities, the government is advocating for a more robust focus on initiatives that foster academic excellence, character building and teamwork. “This is a necessary step to ensure that schools remain a space dedicated to learning and growth, not digital theatrics,” said Sharma.
Step towards nation-building
Educational institutions across Himachal Pradesh are now tasked with upholding this directive and fostering an environment conducive to learning. Authorities believe this move will not only improve educational outcomes but also shape students into responsible citizens who can contribute positively to society.
The decision has been widely appreciated by parents and educators alike, who believe it will encourage meaningful engagement and instill a sense of discipline in students.
